JOOCHUL KIM, Ph.D.
Dr.
Joochul Kim received his Ph.D. and Master’s degrees in Urban and
Regional Planning from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in
1979 and 1977 respectively. He obtained his Bachelor’s of Arts in
Sociology in 1973 from University of California, Berkeley. Since
August 2001, Dr. Kim has been the Academic Program Coordinator at
the School of Planning and Landscape Architecture, Arizona State
University, Tempe, AZ. For almost eleven years, Dr. Kim was the
Director of Special Projects in the Office of the President,
Arizona State University. During this period, he managed a number
of projects, which included the Corporate Government Liaison Project,
the Academic Planning and Development for Second Branch Campus (ASU
East) Project, the Community College Partnership and Outreach
Project, the City of Phoenix Community Partnership Project, and
the Office of Institutional Advancement Assessment and Evaluation
Project, among others.
Dr.
Kim received a Fulbright scholarship in 1986-87 and was Visiting Fulbright Senior Lecturer at the Department of Urban
Planning, Hanyang University, Seoul, South Korea. He was also Visiting Chief Research Associate at Seoul Development Institute
in 1995, and Visiting Professor at Seoul National University in
1987. In addition, Dr. Kim received a number of professional awards
including the “International
Achievements Award” (American English and Culture Program, ASU,
2000), the “Outstanding Scholar Award” (Association of the Korean
Urban and Regional Planners, 1999), the “Man of Achievement” (1987),
the “President’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to Academic
Research in Solar Energy” (Arizona Solar Energy Industry
Association, 1984), and the “Outstanding Young Men of America”
(National Committee of U.S. Jaycees, 1982).
Dr. Kim has received multiple research grants including grants from the City of Phoenix,
the City of
Guadalupe, Arizona Office of Economic Planning and Development,
the Arizona Solar Energy Commission,
and the Office of Academic Affairs, Arizona State University. Dr. Kim is co-author of
the book, Seoul: The Making of A Metropolis (John Wiley &
Sons, 1997), and has contributed book chapters and has edited a
number of books and reports. His articles and reviews have been
published in many national as well as international journals. He
regularly presents papers at meetings and seminars of professional
organizations.
Dr. Joochul
Kim belongs to such professional organizations as the American
Association for Higher Education, the Urban Affairs Association,
the International Division of the American Planning Association,
the Planners
Network, and the Korean Urban and Regional Planning Association. His
teaching areas are: International Planning, Social and Public
Policy, Planning Theory, Research Methods, Planning Studio, Urban
Sociology, Urban Planning Theories and Ethics, and Public Sector
Economy.
